Remains of an ancient large lake on Mars

Observations by NASA’s Curiosity robot indicate that Mount Sharp, located in the center of the great crater Gale, was created by sediments deposited in the bed of a large lake, over tens of millions of years. This interpretation of the findings of Curiosity in that crater suggests that in the past Mars had an atmosphere that could allow the existence of long-lived lakes in many parts of the Red Planet.

This now appears that this was the origin of Mount Sharp, the finding calls into question the idea, so far held by a local segment of the scientific community that the warm, wet conditions on Mars were fleeting, or just underground.
