Rate fears hit stocks after global drop

Stocks on Wall Street opened lower Monday after global equities tumbled and market angst and volatility ticked higher, continuing a stock market selloff sparked by fears that the U.S. central bank could hike interest rates at its meeting next month.

After the opening bell on Wall Street the Dow Jones industrial average was off 60 points, or 0.3%, but off their lows of the morning when the the blue chip stock gauge was down more than 100 points in pre-market trading.
