Rankings -- Noise or Value?

This week, U.S. News & World Report unveiled its 2014-2015 "Best Hospitals" report, which ranks 5,000 institutions. Consumer Reports publishes its own list, and, of course, there are also plenty of sites that rank individual physicians such as Healthgrades or New York Magazine/Castle Connolly.

What kind of value do these types of rankings and reports add to patient care, or do these lists obscure and add noise to an already-difficult-to-navigate physician-patient relationship?
