Coralville, Iowa (ABC9 News) - Prior to RAGBRAI we learned of an Iowa group working to save monarch butterflies. RAGBRAI worked as the perfect opportunity to help prevent the continued decline of the species. Milkweed is the only weed monarchs will lay their eggs on and much of the milkweed seed is now gone from the countryside. So one group called "Monarchs in Eastern Iowa" decided to use the riders as a way to spread milkweed seed.
"We handed out biodegratable tea bags and hand them one to a rider and ask them to go out into the countryside to an unmowed ditch, and unkept ditch with tall grasses and prairie flowers and thats where we asked them to throug them," said Patty Ankrum of Monarchs of Eastern Iowa.
