President Obama welcomed Chinese president Xi Jinping in a White House ceremony laden with pomp and circumstance in which the two leaders appealed for cooperation that their countries have recently found to be elusive in key areas.
"I believe our two great nations, if we work together have an unmatched ability to shape the century ahead," Obama said to an audience on the South Lawn that included the administration's top trade and foreign policy officials and a formal military welcome.
