VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis softened the ban on giving Communion to remarried divorcees Friday, issuing a major document that struck a new tone in some Catholic Church attitudes to family life.
The pontiff avoided a firm ruling on whether civilly-remarried Catholics can receive Communion, instead encouraging priests to show "pastoral discernment" in the "complicated" situations of their parishioners.
