Poor sanitation responsible for mother and newborn deaths in poor economies

Though hygiene and sanitation are of utmost importance during childbirth, there are many nations in the world where lives of newborns and mothers are at risk due to poor sanitation. With medical advancement of developed nations on one side, the other side comprising of developing economies offers a grim picture- even in the 21st century.

Reports point out that even today; mothers and newborns are dying in 54 low-income countries. The reasons cited for such deaths are lack of sanitation, safe water and hygiene while giving birth. This has emerged as a cause of worry indeed for the World Health Organization.
