'Poltergeist' Trailer: The Case For Rip-Offs Over Remakes

On its face this trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Poltergeist looks fine. The cast (Sam Rockwell, Jane Adams, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, etc.) is rock-solid and the production values seem strong, which is always a good thing. I am sure this remake of the 1982 Tobe Hopper/Steven Spielberg “haunted house in suburbia” classic will be satisfactory and I’m sure it will open well on account of the brand name and major studio backing. But this feels like a perfect example of not only a needless remake but potentially a self-defeating one.

For the record, you can make the case that Poltergeist has already been “remade” in the form of Insidious back in 2011.
