Police raises alert level following fatal police shooting

Just as Jerusalem appeared to be on the verge of a third intifada, awash with near daily clashes, the fatal shooting of a young Arab man in northern Israel over the weekend threatened to send tensions over the edge.

Late Friday, as Nazareth police tried to arrest 21-year-old Kheir Hamdan on suspicion that he used a stun grenade in another incident, the suspect approached the police officers wielding a knife. He reportedly tried to stab them and banged loudly on the police car windows.
