Pneumonia raises risk of heart attack, stroke in older adults, study finds

TORONTO - Seniors who develop a bout of pneumonia severe enough to require hospitalization are at higher risk of having a heart attack, stroke or dying of heart failure for years after the event, a new study suggests.

For adults 65 and older, the increased risk is highest in the first year following the infection, but remains elevated for at least a decade — which was the maximum time the researchers followed the patients.
