Pinto Abalone not granted protection under the Endangered Species Act

The pinto abalone will not be listed under the Endangered Species Act, the National Marine Fisheries Service announced Monday. The decision comes after the December 2014 Pinto Abalone Status Review concluded that the pinto abalone faces a low to moderate risk of extinction in the foreseeable future.

Pinto Abalone is a large mollusk which is has been threatened by overfishing and poaching, in addition to natural predators and climate change. The Status Review was prompted by two petitions to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to list the species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
