Photos: Inside the Dangerous Lives of Underage Gold Miners

BANI, Burkina Faso—When the price of gold started to descend in recent years, the children of this desert village did the same: They dug deeper into the ground, risking their young lives to unearth more of the precious metal.

The first time photographer Matjaž Krivic visited Bani, in 2012, boys scraped for gold at the bottom of mines two or three stories deep. The precious metal traded around $1,650 an ounce then, a modest boon to this drought-prone nation of 17 million.
