Pennsylvania to pay federal government for improper payments to immigrants

Pennsylvania agreed to pay the federal government $48.8 million to settle claims that it paid non-emergency Medicaid, family assistance and food stamp benefits to immigrants who did not qualify for them, but state officials deny they mishandled three social welfare programs.

“The department remains committed to protecting taxpayer funds and ensuring our most vulnerable individuals receive the benefits for which they are eligible,” said Kait Gillis, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services.
