Parasitic Bacteria are Close Relatives of Mitochondria, Say Researchers

A latest study conducted by researchers at University of Virginia revealed that parasitic bacteria are the first cousins of mitochondria. The study also said that these parasitic bacteria first acted as energy parasites in those cells before becoming beneficial.

Researchers for this used the next-generation DNA sequencing technologies to decode the genomes of 18 bacteria that are the close relatives of mitochondria.
