Leaving the House of Commons chamber after delivering an update on the recently completed NATO summit, David Cameron didn’t climb into his Jaguar. Instead, he detoured to a secret appointment with Ed Miliband, leader of the opposition and his main political opponent.

Away from the cameras, in the prime minister’s Commons office, the two men had something to discuss that was bigger than their rivalry: the prospect of Scotland breaking away in a referendum 10 days later.
