Over 500 subway riders had to be evacuated Monday by a rescue train when a mechanical problem shut down 7-line service between Manhattan and Queens, authorities said.

When the subway was traveling between Grand Central in Manhattan and Vernon Boulevard in Queens, a piece of its equipment came in contact with a protective board on the third rail, the MTA said.
