'Orphans' nurtures an affecting, funny ferocity

1983 play arrives with its bracing energy, dark humor and tender spirit intact.

NEW YORK -- "We're merely mammals," Cole Porter observed in Let's Misbehave; but the monkeying around he had in mind was very different from the kind that Tom Sturridge demonstrates in the first Broadway production of Lyle Kessler's 1983 play Orphans (three and a half out of four stars).
