Opioid surely helps in relieving from pain, but new study says the practice is to be discontinued during pregnancies. Researchers say it may risk with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Babies may also get exposed to several other complications such as low birth weight (LBW), respiratory complications like meconium aspiration syndrome and respiratory distress, preterm birth, and complicated deliveries as well.
Researchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville conducted the study. They took the help from medical records of pregnant women and their babies from 2009 and 2011 who were part of the Tennessee Medicaid program. The study is published in Pediatrics journal.
