One-day flu cure works but FDA stands in its way

Peramivir, a single injected dose of neuraminidase inhibitor, is safe and effective in eliminating influenza symptoms if the drug is administered within 24 hours of the first symptoms of the flu. These are the conclusions of Rich Whitley of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in a Sept. 6, 2014, presentation at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. The drug that was developed by BioCryst Pharmaceuticals has yet to receive approval by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.

Peramivir has passed both Phase II and Phase III placebo testing by FDA standards. The FDA has raised questions about the contract manufacturer’s practices on May 8, 2014, that may prevent the expected use of peramivir in the upcoming flu season.
