Obama wants $1.2 billion to battle bacteria

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration says it has a plan to combat the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections responsible for an estimated 23,000 deaths and two million illnesses in the United States every year.

"Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing public health issues facing the world today," President Obama said in an interview published Thursday with the health-advice website Web MD.
