PARIS — President Obama told Turkey’s leader Tuesday that the United States would stand by its NATO ally as Turkey grapples with the deepening Syrian crisis on its border.
But Obama also urged the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to seek a “diplomatic path” to defuse tensions with Russia and concentrate on military efforts against their common foe, the Islamic State.
