Obama defends trade pacts in meeting with Italian PM

WASHINGTON — President Obama used a news conference with the Italian prime minister to give a vigorous defense of his trade policies, saying agreements being negotiated would would be different from past trade pacts.

"The politics around trade has always been tough, particularly in the Democratic party, because people have memories of outsourcing and job loss," Obama said Friday. He promised that trade pacts would have strong labor and environmental protections and would help working families.
