NYC celebrates America’s birthday with hot dog gluttony, Coney Island reopening

Mayor Michael Bloomberg got the holiday rolling at the annual Travis Parade on Staten Island. Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut gorged his way into history, winning his seventh consecutive Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. Also at the amusement park, the Luna Park section reopened after officials had the dangerously swaying Astro Tower dismantled.

With star-spangled banners flapping and barbecues sizzling, New Yorkers celebrated America’s 237th birthday at family outings, cheering freedom at parades and Brooklyn’s famed hot dog eating contest.
