Number of people living over 100 years old hits record high in Japan

Sunday, September 14, 2014, 5:35 PM - Japanese government officials say the number of people aged 100 or older has hit a record high of almost 60,000.

Officials with the health and welfare ministry released the results of its annual survey of centenarians in the lead up to Respect for the Aged Day on September 15th. They said there were 58,820 centenarians in Japan as of September 1st, up more than 4,400 from last year.
