The number of people killed in terrorist attacks hit a record high in 2013 and is expected to increase further in 2014, according to a report released Tuesday.

Nearly 18,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks in 2013, representing a 60 percent increase over 2012 when terror attacks claimed nearly 11,000 lives, according to the Global Terrorism Index, published by Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace.

According to the report, which uses data obtained from the U.S.-based Global Terrorism Database, just five countries -- Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria -- accounted for over 80 percent of deaths from terrorism in 2013.
