ABUJA, Nigeria—Nigeria’s military has retaken 36 towns from Boko Haram, officials said Wednesday, amid a multinational campaign to dislodge the Islamist insurgency ahead of national elections late this month.

Mike Omeri, a Nigerian government spokesman, said the towns were recaptured across three states in northeastern Nigeria at the heart of the Belgium-sized chunk of scrubland that Boko Haram has held for months.
