Nigeria Army Repels New Boko Haram Bid to Seize Maiduguri

(Bloomberg) -- Nigerian troops backed by airstrikes beat back Boko Haram Islamists trying for the second time in a week to seize the capital of northeastern Borno state, according to a member of the local youth vigilante group.

At least 70 insurgents, 10 civilians and two soldiers died in the battle for Maiduguri, vigilante member Hassan Ibrahim said by phone from the city. The civilians died after militants fired two rocket-propelled grenades into the Gindari Polo residential area, he said.
