AUCKLAND -- New Zealand's Prime Minister announced Tuesday that up to 143 soldiers will be deployed to Iraq to train and assist Iraqi security forces fighting against Islamic State (ISIS) militants, though he added that troops would not take part in combat operations.

In a statement to New Zealand's parliament, PM John Key said, "Sending our forces to Iraq is not an easy decision but it is the right decision," adding that his government has a duty to join the fight against militants who have taken over large swaths of Iraq and Syria.
