New Year's Eve Stampede Leaves 36 Dead, 48 Injured in Shanghai's Riverfront Bund District

Thirty-six people, many of them students, were killed and dozens injured after New Year’s Eve revelry turned into a stampede in Shanghai’s historic riverside Bund district. The city canceled a light show scheduled for tonight and will review the planning of other large events.

At least 48 people, including one Malaysian and three Taiwanese were hurt in the crush, the People’s Daily reported on its Weibo service. The stampede occurred about 11.35 p.m. at Chen Yi Square as thousands of people prepared to welcome the new year.
