New RISD president hopes to educate the world about art

The prestigious Rhode Island School of Design didn't have a furniture department when Rosanne Somerson arrived in 1972 as an undergraduate from Philadelphia. But that wouldn't stop her from becoming renowned for her intricately designed tables and chairs over the last four decades.

She majored in industrial design but took as many woodworking classes as she could before graduating with her BFA in 1976 and starting a successful furniture design studio in Fall River, Massachusetts.
