Research being conducted by the National Cancer Institute on the taking of a blood sample and identifying cancerous fragments in the DNA to help not only speed up the testing process of a patient with cancer, but also to see if the cancer treatment a patient is undergoing is effective. It was also possible for doctors to look at the cancer cells and diagnosis if treatment would or would not be effective in killing the disease before a treatment is initiated.

The reason for so much hope with this new detection procedure is that it would eliminate most of the physical biopsy now being performed on patients. No longer would a person have to undergo surgery and wait for the test results on the piece of their body that was removed to know if it was cancerous...
