"I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago," Williams, 55, told us about not really being aboard a Chinook helicopter in 2003 that was struck and grounded by enemy fire while he was reporting on the Iraq invasion. "I want to apologize ... I would not have chosen to make this mistake. I don't know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another."
He was in the helicopter behind the bird that went down, and crewmen on the 159th Aviation Regiment's Chinook, according to published accounts, will be the first to tell us so.
