NATO on Thursday said it would deploy three warships to the Aegean Sea to help stop the smuggling of migrants between Turkey and Greece.

The military alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the move was aimed at countering human smuggling and criminal networks, and was not about stopping or sending back boats. Many of the people crossing the Aegean are fleeing the nearly five-year-old war in Syria.
