On the sun, magnetic fields beccome twisted like rubber bands until they snap, releasing violent bursts of energy.

When those high-speed, charged particles reach Earth, magnetic fields again collide, break and reform, releasing energy that causes "space weather" like the Northern and Southern lights, and sometimes geomagnetic storms strong enough to damage satellites or power grids.
