Sen—NASA’s newest solar observatory, IRIS, caught a massive explosion on the Sun in extraordinary detail on 9 May, 2014, the space agency has revealed.

The blast, called a coronal mass ejection, or CME, was the first to be observed by the space telescope, whose name is short for the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, since it was launched nearly a year ago in June 2013.
