NASA’s Dawn is now in its approach phase towards the dwarf planet Ceres, the largest member of the asteroid belt. Dawn is scheduled to enter the orbit of Ceres in March 2015. Dawn was launched in 2007. It is the first spacecraft to visit Ceres and to go into orbit around two extraterrestrial destinations in the Solar System.
Dawn explored Vesta, the second most massive object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, from July 2011 to September 2012, and capturing detailed images and data of the proplanet. Then it began its journey towards Ceres.
