N.J. College Pulls Announcement of Common Speech Amid Controversy

For a few hours Tuesday, it looked like students at New Jersey’s Kean University would be treated to a speech by hip-hop artist Common at May’s graduation ceremony in Newark, but the announcement was soon retracted amid controversy over a 15-year-old song.

The announcement, which was posted on the school’s Twitter account and web page, was made prematurely, The Record of Bergen County, N.J., reported, citing a school representative. Members of New Jersey’s state police criticized the choice of Common, who just won an Oscar for writing the song “Glory”...
