The Blue Hole in Belize is a well-known underwater cave surrounded by brilliant blue lagoons. Now, that destination spot for divers may be providing clues about one of the great mysteries in archaeology as rock samples recovered from inside the cave have reveal evidence of a severe drought, which struck the area in the century between C.E. 800 and 900.

This is the same time that the Mayan civilization, which reached its zenith during the sixth century of the Common Era, disintegrated for the first time.
