Scientists have identified a virus behind the wasting disease that killed millions of starfish along the Pacific coast of North America in almost a year. The virus has been identified as SSaDV or Sea Star Associated Densovirus.

Scientists who were investigating the massive die-off of starfish in the past year ruled out specific bacteria, protozoa and fungi as possible culprits behind this wasting disease.
