Mukpo: ‘Today is a joyful day for me and my family’ as he leaves Neb. hospital, thanks staff who cared for him

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — “I feel profoundly blessed to be alive,” said Rhode Island freelance cameraman Ashoka Mukpo on Wednesday morning, after leaving a Nebraska hospital’s high-tech quarantine unit where he recovered from the Ebola virus he’d contracted in Liberia.

“Today is a joyful day for my family and I,” Mukpo said in a statement released during a news conference at the Nebraska Medical Center. Doctors discussed his successful treatment at the center’s Biocontainment Unit, the largest of its type in the country.
