More than $1 million spent on tobacco in NJ

Trying to reduce the amount of cigarette smokers — an estimated 42.1 million people in the United States alone — is not a modern feat. But for the first time this year in alignment with Tobacco-Free Awareness Week, spanning from Jan. 18 to 24, academics compiled a record of just how expensive smoking can be by looking at more than just the price sticker on a pack of Marlboro Reds.

The researchers, St. Francis College’s Irina Ellison and Hunter College’s Dee Burton, looked at four aspects for determining the cost of smoking, according to a study by WalletHub.
