Minimally invasive surgery safe for rectal cancer

(Reuters Health) - People undergoing surgery for rectal cancer fare just as well whether they have conventional or minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, suggests a new international comparison involving 1,044 patients.

However, when the tumor is in the lower rectum, laparoscopic surgery seems better, according to the results in the New England Journal of Medicine.
