Million-Year Old Massive Extinction Mystery Answered by Chicxulub Crater

About 65 million years ago, an asteroid was said to have hit the Earth which caused the extinction of dinosaurs and other planetary species. The asteroid left the Chicxulub crater which is drilled by a group of international researchers reaching a depth of 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) below the Earth’s surface.

The main reason for the drilling is to ‘restore the cross section of the Earth that starts from the center of the crater in Yucatan Peninsula’, as said by Sean Gulick, leader of the drilling project.
