The 2012 national fungal meningitis outbreak left Peggy Nuerenberg grappling daily with sadness and grief over the loss of her mother — one of 23 Michigan residents who died after becoming ill.

Federal authorities announced that 14 owners or employees of a Massachusetts pharmacy that prepared tainted steroid injections have been charged in connection with the outbreak that killed 64 people nationwide.
