Mental health workers at constant risk and require more stringent protection laws

Dr. Lee Silverman was able to save his own life and that of others when he shot a patient who opened fire and killed caseworker at a hospital just outside Philadelphia. It was fortunate that the doctor used his presence of mind when violence broke out at the Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. The patient was suffering from a mental illness.

The patient, Richard Plotts killed 53-year old Theresa Hunt during an appointment on July 24 at the hospital. No surveillance cameras were found in the office or the waiting area.
