Medicare to cover cost of lung cancer screening for current, former smokers at high risk

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Three months after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that it was considering a proposal to cover the cost of lung cancer screening for a specific group of Medicare recipients, the agency made it official.

CMS issued a decision Thursday that paves the way for the cost of lung cancer screening with low-dose computer tomography to be covered for people at high risk of the disease, who are between 55 and 77, and who have no signs or symptoms of lung disease.
