Mark Rylance to Lead Two Shakespeare Plays on Broadway This Fall

The two-time Tony Award winner Mark Rylance will return to Broadway this fall to lead all-male ensembles in a double bill of Shakespeare, playing the besotted noblewoman Olivia in “Twelfth Night” and the titular monstrous monarch in “Richard III,” the producers Sonia Friedman and Scott Landis said on Thursday. Mr. Rylance’s fellow British actor Stephen Fry (“Wilde,” “Blackadder”) will make his Broadway debut in the “Twelfth Night” production, playing the priggish manservant Malvolio.

The plays, which will rotate in repertory, mark the first time that productions from Shakespeare’s Globe in London will be performed on Broadway. The plays ran at the Globe last fall and then transferred to the West End, receiving critical acclaim.
