Marine Sanctuary Expanding Boundaries of Lake Huron

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is expanding its boundaries from its present 448 square miles of Lake Huron to 4,300 square miles. The expansion is based on the various years of research by NOAA and its many scientific partners. The nation's only freshwater sanctuary is also increasing efforts to protect sunken vessels in an area of Lake Huron known as Shipwreck Alley.

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary has its headquarters in Alpena, Michigan. It is one of 14 sites handled by NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and it is the only one in the Great Lakes.
