Offering choices is easy — it's getting people to make one particular choice that's hard.

That's always been the case with TV, but broadcast and cable outlets at least have the built-in advantage of old habits and viewer inertia. A network program may face a lot of competitors, but as a practical matter, there's a limit on how many it faces at once.
