The upcoming flyby of asteroid ‘2004 BL86′, which will safely pass Earth on the night of Jan. 26-27, opens discussion on how the space rocks will be useful in the future.

An asteroid, labeled 2004 BL86 and estimated to be nearly a third of a mile in size, is expected to safely pass approximately three times the distance of Earth to the moon on Jan. 26, marking the closest flyby of any known space rock to date.
